Using Soap Nuts for Laundry Detergent
I have used Soap Nuts for my laundry detergent for
at least 10-12 loads now and I am very happy with the results. Everything, including many cloth diapers, have come out
of the washer smelling fresh and clean. Pretty much no smell at all.
Homemade Laundry Detergent
I had been trying a homemade laundry detergent. It was made up of a homemade bar soap, borax and washing
soda. This recipe was not cleaning our clothes very well. I have also been reading more on borax and am now
taking it out of my household cleaners. You can read more borax and wether or not it is safe here.
Soap Nuts Liquid
I just got finished filtering my cooked Soap Nuts. I took 4oz of Soap Nuts and put them in 6 cups
of water to boil for 30 minutes. This takes the saponin (the cleaning agent) out of the Soap Nuts. I added 12
drops of grapefruit seed extract for a natural preservative. I am not a fan of the vinegar smell so I also added a splash
(I don't always measure - I know horrible) of lavender essential oil and a splash of peppermint essential oil. I
would guess about 1tsp of each.
I tried putting into a foam pumping bottle to use in the bathroom for hand soap. It
doesn't foam. The soap/water solution seems to almost clog the pump. I placed it into a regular pump bottle
for hand washing.
