Coconut Oil

Versatility of Coconut Oil
Coconut Oil is an amazing oil.  It can be used in many areas of our life.  Coconut oil can be used in our diet for preventive and healing properties as well as in our baking.  It can also be used topically in skin care and hair care products.

Benefits of Coconut Oil
Coconut oil has gotten a bad rap for having saturated fats but as I looked into this issue more you find that it contains 50% lauric acid which is good for the heart.  Lauric acid is a medium chain fatty acid.  It is good at preventing high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

One of the most amazing things that I found out about coconut oil is its preventive and healing properties against diseases.  In a study at Georgetown University by Dr. Harry Preuss, antimicrobial properties were found because of the high amounts of lauric acid.  Another researched and found that it could even help and prevent a staph infection!  Read more

Coconut oil can help your body inside and out and head to toe.  Read more about the health benefits

Cooking with Coconut Oil
You can substitute coconut oil for all of your butter use in your kitchen, including baking.  The results will be excellent!  Use it for frying or add coconut oil to smoothies.  Here is a recipe for a smoothie using coconut oil:

Smoothie Recipe
1 banana
1-2 Tb Coconut Oil
1/2 cup fresh or frozen fruit
1 cup milk (you can also use juice)
1 cup ice
(add yogurt for more calcium, just up the liquid a little)
Blend and enjoy!  My kids love this!!!

Coconut Oil for your Hair

Coconut oil makes an excellent leave in conditioner and styling aid.  Add a very small amount to your hair for a conditioner.  (I found out the hard way that your hair will be very greasy with not very much!)  Use on your hair after blowing it try for a nice pomade.

Coconut Oil for your Body

You can use coconut oil for an all over moisturizer with excellent mositurizing results.  Coconut oil used as skin care helps with aging because of its antioxidant properties.

For a couple years I have been simply using baking soda for a natural deodorant with great results.  I have tried out a recipe using coconut oil and have switch!

Natural Deodorant using Coconut Oil
5 Tb coconut oil
1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup cornstarch
20 drops lavender essential oil

Mix ingredients and store.  Use your fingers to apply a little under your arm for deodorant.

**I have found that this works even better then baking soda alone.  I believe it is the antimicrobial properties of the coconut oil.  Works to re-apply before you can get in your next shower - Mommies you know what I am talking about here!**

Purchase Coconut Oil
I have found an excellent company online called
Mountain Rose Herbs.  They sell all kinds of wonderful natural products one being organic virgin unrefined coconut oil!  They have two different sizes, one gallon and five gallons.  If you go in with some friends you can get a great deal with the 5 gallon size.  Remember what you will be saving on when changing over to coconut oil.  Hair conditioner, skin care products, lotions, butter and all your other cooking oils.  I love it!  Not only are you getting amazing health benefits but you can actually afford coconut oil.

Organic herbs, spices, teas and oils.

Costs to order Coconut Oil from Mountain Rose Herbs above:

1 Gallon = 16 cups
37.00 + 14.16 (this is to ship it to WI) = $51.16
51.16 / 16 = $3.20/cup

5 Gallons = 80 cups
149.00 + 39.28 (again shipping to me) = $188.28
188.28 / 5 (order with friends) = $37.66/gallon
37.66 / 16 = $2.35/cup

I wanted to see the cost per cup to see how it would work out in baking.  Now this does look high to me compared to butter.  When I look at the other things that coconut oil will be replacing in my skin care and the health benefits it is worth it.  Besides how often do I really bake and it doesn't mean that I have to replace my butter with coconut oil.  For my family coconut oil seems to be worth while purchasing for its many benefits!
